An unpublished draft of an article written in June 1997 that eventually became Looking For Rodriguez published in Directions magazine in October 1997. "Climb up on my music", exclaims the folk artist known as Jesus Rodriguez, "and my songs will set you free". When Cold Fact was released in SA in the early seventies, no-one was free.

The artist known simply as Rodriguez was born Sixto (pronounced "Seez-toe") Diaz Rodriguez in Detroit, Michigan, USA in 1942. He was the sixth child (the Sixth Prince) of immigrant Mexican parents. He recorded the classic album Cold Fact in Detroit in 1969, but it sank without a trace.

Rodriguez first appeared on the Detroit music scene in 1967 when he released ‘I’ll Slip Away’ on the Impact label, which was incorrectly credited to "Rod Riguez". In 1969 he went back into the studio and the ‘Cold Fact’ album was completed and released in March 1970 on the Sussex label.

Sixto Diaz Rodriguez toiled for decades as a day laborer in Detroit's gritty Cass Corridor. To this day, he rides the D-Dot bus to get around town. Just last week, Entertainment Weekly declared him a genius. Four decades ago, Rodriguez recorded 12 sweet, yet dark, psychedelic-tinged folk-rock songs for the album, "Cold Fact," in a Detroit basement.
