The reason Deacon has the callsign 30 David is because he is a Sergeant II, and, is technically the 30 Squad Leader, despite him not actually having a team. Regardless of his assignment, his Department rank of Sergeant II is the same as Hondo’s.

David Martinez and his crew got demolished by Smasher despite having the cyberskeleton. And V won a head-on fight against Smasher. Safe to say V would demolish David's team (and Maine's team even more so.) Depending on how you build V he can be a better netrunner than Lucy or a better techie than Pilar while still being a better solo than David.

David is just a teen that quickly got borged up with a advanced cyberskeleton while Adam Smasher was a soldier and a merc before working with Arasaka and has been with Arasaka for nearly 50 years along with the best tech Arasaka can offer.

Writing-wise, David's end is the apex of the message that people don't get happy endings in Night City. His ability to defy a corporation as long as he did and rescue a loved one was already an incredible feat, and a defiance of that pessimistic outlook on life, but everything he had to sacrifice for it helped keep the thing grounded.

Dec 26, 2022 · The most lasting feeling I have after watching the show is that watching David gradually replace more and more of his organic body with robotic parts was horrifying. When he merges with the cyberskeleton at the end and is essentially just a torso connected to a machine, that made me sad, even before he seemingly died.
