The suicide rate among males in 2022 was approximately four times higher than the rate among females. Males make up 50% of the population but nearly 80% of suicides. People ages 85 and older had the highest rates of suicide in 2022.

Between 2015 and 2020, suicide rates increased for those ages 15 to 24, 25 to 34, and 35 to 44. For the 45 to 54 age group, the rate was fairly steady and then decreased around 2019. For those ages 55 to 64, rates increased steadily starting in 2015, followed by a downward turn in 2018.

The total age-adjusted suicide rate increased 30% from 2002 (10.9 deaths per 100,000 standard population) to 2018 (14.2), declined through 2020 (13.5), and then increased to 14.2 in 2022, which was similar to the rate in 2021 (14.1) (Figure 1, Table 1). Suicide rates significantly increased between 2020 and 2021 for males aged 15–24, 25–44, 65–74, and 75 and over. From 2020 to 2021, suicide rates increased significantly for non-Hispanic Black (subsequently, Black) and non-Hispanic White (subsequently, White) females.

Results—The provisional number of suicides in 2021 (47,646) was 4% higher than in 2020 (45,979). The provisional age-adjusted suicide rate also was 4% higher in 2021 (14.0 per 100,000 standard population) than in 2020 (13.5).
