As the away team lands on Cestus Three they snap into action upon discovering the destruction. “Lang, over there! Look for survivors” Kirk barks to a man in gold. “Kelowicz, that way!” he orders a man wearing blue. “O'Herlihy, stick with me,” he says to the man wearing red.

Redshirt is a term used by fans and staff of Star Trek to refer partially to the characters who wear red Starfleet uniforms, and mainly to refer to those characters who are expendable, and quite often killed, sometimes in great numbers, often security guards.

The apparent red shirt for a mission not only survives but saves the rest of the away team. Played with in the Day of Honor TOS novel. A redshirt got himself good and toasted... but it was in an honorable way to the Klingons.

Mar 1, 2015 · When you account for the fact that fewer main characters are red shirts, and that MOST of the time, only Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beam down to the planet, red shirts appear to die more than other shirt colors.

Nov 21, 2015 · Kirk wore a yellow shirt if I recall correctly and typically had a no-name red shirt along as security to die early in any away team mission. In Star Trek Online, red is tactical, yellow engineering and blue is science (didn't spock wear blue?).

May 21, 2025 · Let's just say the first away team wore red shirts. Its made with a 2.0 water washable resin and seems sturdy enough for game play, but I would still be careful. I'll post a link to files when it's approved.

This gives us 0.7 casualties per episode, or roughly one casualty every three weeks. 26 of those 55 killed men or women were wearing a red shirt or an equivalent red engineering/security uniform.
