Nov 2, 2008 · I just wanted to add that shut the light is not good English. You can "shut" the door or the window but you "turn off" the light. There's an interesting reason that it is "turn off" and "turn on" by the way. It has to do with putting the electrical contact on the switchplate and off the switchplate. The origin of the phrase is quite old but we still use it.
