Lebanon–Syria relations were officially established in October 2008 when Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad issued a decree to establish diplomatic relations with Lebanon for the first time since both countries gained independence from France in 1943 (Lebanon) and 1946 (Syria). [1] .

Syrian military invaded Lebanon after orders from Hafez al-Assad on 31 May 1976. The military occupation of Lebanon by Ba'athist Syria lasted from 1976, beginning with the Syrian intervention in the Lebanese Civil War, until April 30, 2005.

Between 2011 and 2017, fighting from the Syrian Civil War spilled over into Lebanon as opponents and supporters of the Syrian rebels travelled to Lebanon to fight and attack each other on Lebanese soil.
