The process of lode, hard rock mining, is the process where gold is extracted directly from the lode vein beneath the ground. Dig down about 3 feet as go through the claim, then pick, shovel, and rock hammer working the sides of that hole.

The Golden Crown Mine is located near the town of Custer in South Dakota. This mining site has a historical connection to the Custer Mining District, which is now part of the Black Hills National Forest. Currently, the Golden Crown Mine is closed, and there are no known plans to reopen it.

When the vein angled underground, a vertical shaft was dug to mine beneath the ground. The Gol d Mountain Mill was constructed in the mid-1930’s. The mill, capable of milling 25-tons of gold ore per day is still evident at the site.
