The Westslope Cutthroat Trout is one of two species of native cutthroat found in the state. Together they have been designated Montana's state fish, the Blackspotted Cutthroat Trout. Cutthroat trout are so named for the red slashes near the lower jaws.

Largest native range of all Westslope Cutthroat, and are native to parts of the upper Columbia, Fraser and Saskatchewan watersheds in Washington, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia, and Alberta.

Cutthroat Trout tend to be between 6 and 16 inches long. They are a golden gray-green in color, and are speckled with black spots. They also have large irregular greenish gray spots across their bodies.

The Blackspotted Cutthroat Trout, (Salmo clarki,) was designated the official Montana state fish on February 10, 1977. While Montana, Idaho and Wyoming simply adopted the "cutthroat trout" as their state fish, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico adopted particular subspecies.
