More recently, atmospheric river activity has contributed to the February-March 2022 floods in eastern Australia when a blocking high pressure system allowed an atmospheric river to persist over southeast Queensland and northern NSW. Combined with a low-pressure region over NSW, this combination of weather systems led to devastating floods.

Atmospheric rivers are essential to the water cycle. They shift 90 per cent of the air’s water vapour, but cover less than 10 per cent of the planet. A big atmospheric river can move a quarter of a million tonnes of water each second past a given point.

We research a weather system called “atmospheric rivers”, which is causing this inundation. Indeed, atmospheric rivers triggered many of the world’s floods in 2021, including the devastating floods across eastern Australia in March which killed two people and saw 24,000 evacuate.
