Jan 9, 2020 · Peering through his newly-improved 20-power homemade telescope at the planet Jupiter on Jan. 7, 1610, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei noticed three other points of light near the planet, at first believing them to be distant stars.

Over the eight weeks from January 7 to March 2, 1610, Galileo sketched 64 observations of the positions of these four moons relative to Jupiter. The following pages reproduce all 64 sketches, along with a modern calculation of the moons' positions and some brief commentary.

Between January 7 and January 24, 1610, Galileo made such a series of sketches of Jupiter and its four largest moons (Figure 1). We have provided a computer-generated series of diagrams of Jupiter and its moons for this same time period, spaced exactly one day apart (Figure 2).

Humanity's view of the universe was profoundly changed when in 1610 Galileo turned his telescope to the night sky and Jupiter in particular. He discovered four satellites revolving around the planet.
