According to Sunni Muslim tradition it was Abu Bakr (r. 632–634), the first caliph, who compiled the Quran, and Uthman (r. 644–656) the third caliph, who canonised the standard version of Quran since accepted. With the canonisation, Uthman commanded that all earlier versions of the Quran be burned.

For a long time, the Blue Qur'an, the Topkapi manuscript, and the Samarkand Kufic Quran were considered the oldest Quran copies in existence. Both codices are more or less complete. They are written in the Kufic script .

The Birmingham Quran Manuscript is currently believed to be the oldest Quran in the world. This manuscript consists of two leaves of parchment that are a fragment of an early Quranic manuscript dated between 568 AD – 645 AD.
