Read Across America week starts on March 2nd. The week is dedicated to getting kids and adults to read. It takes place around the birth of the beloved author Dr. Seuss, with many schools and libraries hosting events that promote a variety of genres.

Sheila Bradley of Osborne Books said there was a line of customers waiting to get their free books on Sunday during the Read Across America event, which promoted reading at the Kukui Grove Center.

Anyone who shares a birthday with the author can get a free copy of "The Cat in the Hat." But what is Dr. Seuss Day and why do we celebrate it?

Read Across America Week, which is a program that promotes reading and literacy, especially for children and young adults.

Youngsters gathered around the George W. Armstron Library for fun games, hotdogs and readings of beloved Dr. Seuss books for the library’s annual Dr. Seuss Block party on Saturday. Readers and volunteers donned striped “Cat in the Hat”-themed hats for the event.

The annual event is held in conjunction with the birthday of Dr. Seuss, March 2. To celebrate, local schools and libraries are hosting activities all week long to get kids excited about reading. Many organizations are featuring dress-up days as part of the celebration.
