Gil won the American League Rookie of the Year Award on Monday night, beating out Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser by only five points. Gil received 15 first-place votes and Cowser got 13. Yankees catcher Austin Wells was also a finalist, finishing third.

Gil replaced Gerrit Cole in the Yankees' rotation during spring training, then did his best Gerrit Cole impression.

It’s the first time the rookie awards went to two pitchers since 2011. Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu finished sixth among the seven AL players to receive a vote.
