An Israeli airstrike killed five people in central Beirut on Monday, Lebanon's Health Ministry said, the second day in a row Israel has hit a target within the capital as it presses its campaign against the Iran-backed Hezbollah.

The Hezbollah militant group has a strong presence in central Beirut, known as the Dahiyeh, and the strikes came as Lebanese officials are considering a U.S.-brokered cease-fire proposal.

An Israeli air strike hit a densely-populated neighborhood in the heart of Beirut Sunday evening, killing one person and wounding nine others, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
