Charleston County hoped voters would approve an extra sales tax to fund the $2.3 billion Mark Clark Extension, but more than 60 percent of voters said no.

Voters in Charleston County resoundingly said “no” to renewing a half-cent sales tax that would fund road projects, mass transit systems and greenspace.

The half-cent sales tax extension would have funded about a dozen infrastructure projects, including the long-discussed Mark Clark Extension.

Charleston County voters appeared to send a solid “no” message Tuesday to Charleston County Council on its request to extend a half-cent sales tax to raise billions for road and other projects.

Local officials held campaigns for and against the transportation sales tax referendum on Wednesday. Leaders who are in favor of the tax referendum cited traffic congestion, preserving greenspace, and improvements to biker and pedestrian safety.

Guilford County asked voters, once again, to vote on a quarter-cent sales tax increase. A whopping 59% of ballots cast were against the increase, with only 40% voting in favor. This particular referendum has failed multiple times in the last several years.
