America's popular bourbon whiskey, known for its hint of sweetness, has got a sweet deal in India. Customs duty on such whiskey makers has been slashed by as much as 66.6 per cent, effectively making it one-third the cost of what it is currently.

India has slashed tariffs on bourbon whisky to 100% from 150%, a move that will benefit imports of brands like Suntory's Jim Beam, after U.S. President Donald Trump's criticised "unfair" levies in the South Asian market.

India slashed customs duty on bourbon whiskey, from 150% to 50%, effective February 13. This tariff cut is exclusive to bourbon whiskey, while other imported alcoholic beverages will remain subject to a 100% import duty.

NEW DELHI – In a significant move to boost trade ties with the United States, India has slashed import duties on American bourbon whiskey from 150% to 50. The announcement came just ahead of a high-profile bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump, where trade and tariffs were key agenda items.

In an official notification issued on February 13, the central government announced the decision to reduce tariffs on bourbon whisky to 100 per cent from 150 per cent. Under the revised structure, bourbon will now be subjected to a basic customs duty of 50 per cent on bourbon,

The basic customs duty on bourbon whisky will be 50%, while an agricultural cess of 50% has also been imposed. Bourbon whisky accounts for as much as one-fourth or 25 per cent of all such liquor imports in India.
