Record-breaking Wolf 907F, the alpha of the Junction Butte pack, died after a confrontation with a rival pack at Yellowstone River on Christmas Day.

The matriarch of the Junction Butte pack birthed a total of 10 litters, the most recent of which were born in May 2024. Although the total number of surviving offspring are unknown, she is considered the most reproductively successful wolf in Yellowstone’s history.

The long-lived, one-eyed wolf 907F died this Christmas after a fight with a rival wolf pack, Yellowstone researchers have confirmed.

One of Yellowstone National Park’s oldest gray wolves, a one-eyed matriarch dubbed 907F, has died after sustaining wounds in a fight with a rival pack. Affectionately named “queen of the wolves”, 907F lived to the grand age of 11 – exceptionally long for a wild canid – and birthed an astonishing 10 litters in her time.

The collar on 907F, one of the best-known gray wolves in Yellowstone National Park, signaled "mortality" last week—indicating the matriarch of the Junction Butte pack had died of injuries suffered in a fight at age 11.
