In the “Last of Us,” people who have the disease are simply called “infected.” Before Joel met Ellie, he had a 14-year-old daughter named Sarah (Nico Parker). During the “Last of Us” season 1 premiere, Joel and Sarah escape an infected only to get shot at by an armed soldier. Joel survives the shooting, but Sarah dies in his arms.
