Sam Nujoma, the freedom fighter who became Namibia's founding president after leading the country to independence from apartheid South Africa, has died.

Born on May 12, 1929, at Etunda village, Omusati Region, in northwestern Namibia, Nujoma served as the country's first president from 1990 to 2005

Namibia's vice president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has paid tribute to founding president Sam Nujoma, who died on Saturday evening. Nujoma (95) died after having been being hospitalised in Windhoek for the past three weeks. President Nangolo Mbumba announced the news on Sunday.
