Penguins' defenseman Matt Grzelcyk - signed to a one-year, $2.75 million contract this past summer - reached a new career-high of 27 points with his assist on a Marcus Pettersson goal during the second period of a tilt against the Utah Hockey Club.
Grzelcyk is up to a career-high 27 points while adding 63 shots on net, 70 blocked shots and a minus-14 rating through 53 appearances this season. It wouldn't be surprising for the 31-year-old to end up around the 40-point mark if he sustains his current pace.
Even though the Penguins are currently seven points out of a wild card spot, they're a hot streak away from getting themselves right back in the playoff race. And losing Grzelcyk may be pretty detrimental to their power play, which is one of the only things giving the season any hope at this point.
Grzelcyk notched an assist and two shots on goal in Monday's 2-1 loss to the Sharks. Grzelcyk continues to chip in on offense with four helpers over his last six games. He also has eight shots on net and three blocked shots in that span.
Marcus Pettersson landing on injured reserve forced the Pittsburgh Penguins to do some tinkering on the blue line. Pettersson had been Erik Karlsson’s defensive partner since Karlsson debuted with the Penguins last season.
The Pittsburgh Penguins played a game in the Beehive State for the first time Thursday. And that new experience led to an infrequent experience — over recent weeks, anyway — as they defeated the Utah Hockey Club,
Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored milestone goals and the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated Los Angeles 5-1, snapping the Kings' nine-game home win streak.
The Pittsburgh Penguins (20-24-8) have one more chance to salvage a good feeling from this extended seven-game road trip that seemingly began a lifetime ago with a joyous victory over the Buffalo Sabres and Alex Nedeljkovic’s goalie goal.
Even though fellow left defenseman Marcus Pettersson figures to be the Penguins' most valuable asset on the trade block, Grzelcyk may bring back some unexpected value. The way the season ...
The Pittsburgh Penguins’ longest road trip since 1997 is now officially in the books. Thanks in large part to the efforts of two players who carried the way throughout the 14-day journey, the Penguins
These are my three favorite NHL props for Wednesday, January 30. If there is a team to fade tonight, it’s the Philadelphia Flyers. They just wrapped up a home-and-home with the Devils last night in a 5-0 loss where first-liner Owen Tippett exited. It will be Ivan Fedotov in net, which is an advantage for the red-hot New York Islanders.
The Penguins held on the rest of the third period to secure at least a loser’s point, and then controlled the puck for most of overtime. Crosby then turned to his trademark backhand for his 95th career game-winning goal, and fourth tally in five games to send the Penguins back to Pittsburgh in better spirits.
