Brazil’s Supreme Court blocked the platform after Elon Musk failed to comply with court rulings. As X evades the ban and Musk’s companies work slowly toward a resolution, the real concern for many isn’t just the absence of social media.

The capitulation by Musk was met by relief by many in Brazil. The decision to suspend X was seen by many here as extreme. But in a country deeply protective of its sovereignty and sensitive to foreign meddling, many also felt Musk had gone too far in attacking Brazil’s highest court.

In an abrupt reversal, the social network’s lawyers said it was complying with court orders that it had previously defied. Brazil’s Supreme Court could allow the site to return next week.

The Brazilian Supreme Court said on Friday that the tech company must pay over $5 million in fines before the platform’s services can resume in the country.

The payment of the $1.9 million fine would allow X to “immediately return to its activities in national territory,” according to the country's court.
