Charleston County hoped voters would approve an extra sales tax to fund the $2.3 billion Mark Clark Extension, but more than 60 percent of voters said no.

Voters in Charleston County resoundingly said “no” to renewing a half-cent sales tax that would fund road projects, mass transit systems and greenspace.

Charleston County voters did not approve the transportation sales tax referendum during Tuesday’s election. A majority of residents voted no on the ballot questions, meaning the sales tax will not be renewed this year.

Guilford County asked voters, once again, to vote on a quarter-cent sales tax increase. A whopping 59% of ballots cast were against the increase, with only 40% voting in favor. This particular referendum has failed multiple times in the last several years.
