THE Cooley Peninsula Ploughing and Field Day, the 2nd running of the event, takes place on Sunday August 24, at a site at Riverstown just beyond Martins.

We may fancy our chances — rather optimistically — at football or rugby. But the one area where Ireland can genuinely lay claim to being a world-class contender is ploughing.

The ploughing begins with some vintage machines which discipline the impossible clay. Glossy black slices of perfection are carved and revealed from the stubbly ground. It looks like melted chocolate.
