The Allstate Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame is now expected to kick off at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, according to multiple sources.

Some Georgia and Notre Dame fans had to skip Thursday's game because of their travel plans. Some left New Orleans because they knew they'd feel safer at home.

Postponements of major sports events are rare and have happened typically because of storms or earthquakes. One notable exception was the 10-day pause in New York after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. More recently, sporting events around the country were on hold for months after the coronavirus outbreak in March 2020.

A terrorist attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans delayed the highly anticipated Sugar Bowl College Football Playoff game by a day. A pair of siblings from Chicago who came to New Orleans for the game were staying in a hotel right in front of which the early New Year's Day morning pickup truck attack happened.

After the game was postponed due to the Bourbon Street attack, thousands of fans filled the Superdome to watch the Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame. NBC News' Jesse Kirsch reports on the heightened security at the venue,

College football fans observed a moment of silence at the Superdome on Thursday, honoring victims of a terrorist attack that pushed the Sugar Bowl off its traditional New Year's Day perch in New Orleans.
