Zu Lai, the largest Buddhist temple in South America, is located in Cotia, just 18 miles from downtown São Paulo, Brazil. Still, it feels like another country.

But as a scholar of religion in Latin America, I believe that it is his time in Peru that has best prepared him to take on the challenges of directing the global Catholic Church.
