Six prison workers in New York were indicted on murder charges Thursday in connection with the death of an inmate who was beaten while handcuffed.

Prosecutors investigating the death of a handcuffed man who was punched and roughed up by guards in an upstate New York prison were scheduled to appear in court with the announcement of possible criminal charges.

Syracuse, N.Y. — At least nine prison employees will be charged next week in sealed indictments issued by a grand jury in the death of inmate Robert Brooks, according to a source familiar with the case. The indictments are scheduled to be unsealed in Oneida County Court on Tuesday, the source said.

The indictment alleges the officers beat the shackled Robert Brooks, 39, twice on the way to Marcy Correctional Facility, then again in an infirmary as he showed “minimal resistance.”
