New York’s top court was asked Tuesday to reverse a ruling against a law that would allow noncitizens to vote in New York City municipal elections by lawyers who argued city officials acted within their legal powers.

If the court upholds a city law, more than 800,000 people would be newly eligible to register in New York City

The law was previously struck down by two lower courts that found the measure violated the state's constitution.
