Iringa was born in 1969 in Mozambique and arrived at the Toronto Zoo in 1974. The elephant became a political issue in 2011, as animal welfare experts urged relocation of the pachyderms.

Iringa, along with Thika and Toka, were moved to the sanctuary in 2013 after the zoo ended its elephant program and Toronto city council voted to relocate them.

Iringa, an African elephant and longtime resident of the Toronto Zoo has died. The pachyderm was euthanized yesterday morning at the ARK 2000 wildlife sanctuary in San Andreas, California.
