So far in 2021, catch basin cleanings have been concentrated in Leonidas (95 cleanings), the 7th Ward (79 cleanings), Hollygrove (68 cleanings), Mid-City (66 cleanings) and Audubon (52 cleanings).

Councilman Giarrusso says there's 72,000 catch basins across the city, but less than 4,000 of them have been cleaned over the last two years. Now he's calling for the catch basins to be cleaned ASAP.

According to the city's Department of Public Works, as of July crews have cleaned 5,055 catch basins and flushed more than 7,000 linear feet of drain lines.

Federal funds are also helping to clean catch basins. Earlier this year, federal money was paid to contractors to clean 1,500 catch basins in just two months.
