A Disney-distributed sequel has crossed a billion dollars at the global box office. Disney’s various studios have delivered quite a few films to the $1 billion club, with Moana 2 being the latest adventure to cross the infamous threshold.

Despite Thanksgiving holdovers and more year-end releases, the Canadian exhibitor said domestic ticket sales in December, while up from a year-earlier in 2023, were still below pre-pandemic levels.

Disney’s “Moana 2” dominated December, adding $604 million to its gross for a cumulative $904 million. The animated sequel is on track to become the third global release of 2024 to break the $1 billion mark, joining “Inside Out 2” ($1.7 billion) and “Deadpool & Wolverine” ($1.34 billion).

Full-year ticket sales were down just 3.4% from 2023, reaching $8.74 billion, a far cry from the nearly 27% shortage seen at the midway point of 2024.
