Former President Jimmy Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and the longest-living chief executive in U.S. history, has died. He was 100.

He and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, then formed The Carter Center, and he earned a Nobel Peace Prize while making himself the most active and internationally engaged of former presidents. The Carter Center said the former president died Sunday afternoon in Plains, Georgia.

Carter was born Oct. 1, 1924, to a prominent family in rural south Georgia. He went on to the U.S. Naval Academy during World War II and pursued a career as a Cold War Naval officer before returning to Georgia with Rosalynn and their young family to take over the family peanut business after Earl Carter’s death in the 1950s.

President-elect Donald Trump paid his respects to former President Jimmy Carter on Wednesday at the Capitol Rotunda.

The public will be able to pay their respects to the 39th president at the U.S. Capitol until his state funeral Thursday morning.

The nation pauses to honor Jimmy Carter for his service as a naval officer, governor and president, and his four decades of humanitarian work after leaving the White House.
