Israel is weighing an expansion of its armed presence in Gaza, even as military chiefs and a majority of the public oppose the idea out of concern for the fate of hostages still held by Hamas.

The Canadian Armed Forces deployed a Hercules aircraft to airdrop nearly 10,000 kilograms of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, the second airdrop of aid in the past five days.

More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since May while trying to get food in Gaza, mostly near food sites run by an American contractor, the U.N. human rights office said.
