The commandant of the Iowa Veterans Home was relieved of his duties last week, according to a spokesperson for Gov. Kim Reynolds, who provided no further details.

Ben Hammes, spokesman for Republican Gov. Terry Branstad, noted that Tymeson has been commandant at the home for two years. "Gov. Branstad has confidence in her leadership," he said.

David Worley has been commandant of the veterans home since 2010. Former staffers criticized his leadership during a State Senate hearing in May.

As the first commandant of the state's newest veterans home, Barbeau will be in charge of the home's overall operation and will guide its expansion. The home was dedicated in August 2001.
