Footnotes vs. endnotes Before we begin, we need to clarify the terms footnote and endnote. You’ll find both on the References tab in the Footnotes group. The only difference is their placement.
A footnote is at the bottom of the page containing its reference number. Endnotes appear at the end of the whole document. To place an endnote, go to the References tab and select Insert Endnote.
