Severe storms dumped about half a year’s rainfall in two days, leading to flash floods across both sides of the border.

More than 3,400 in several counties in South Texas remained without power on Friday afternoon, according to AEP Texas. A flood warning was still in effect for portions of South Texas, including Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties, through early Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The combination of slow-moving storms, high precipitation rates and already saturated soils could lead to excessive runoff, “flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, urban, poor drainage and other flood-prone, low-lying areas,” the weather service reported.

Abandoned vehicles littered submerged roads across South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley Thursday and Friday after over half year’s worth of rain – approaching a full year’s worth in some places – forced dozens of water rescues near the US-Mexico border.

Storms dumped 10 to 15 inches of rain on South Texas in under two days this week. The excessive rain caused dangerous flash flooding, and dozens of water rescues were conducted in the town of Alamo, Texas.
