According to the U.S. Apple Association, the Red Delicious been knocked off the top of the pile by the Gala variety, after more than five decades as the country's best-selling apple.

What do you think the best apple is? For 50 years, Red Delicious topped sales in the United States — until it lost its throne this year. And in Canada, three other varieties take the crown.

U.S. growers will adjust their yields to produce 52.4-million boxes of Gala apples (up 5.8 per cent from 2017), and lower their Red Delicious production by 11 per cent to 51.7-million boxes.

But don't count out the Red Delicious just yet. Our former No. 1 apple has slipped just one spot to be our second favorite choice and is expected to claim 12.3% of the market.
