Tony Magee, founder of Lagunitas Brewing Company, began brewing beer in 1993. Magee launched Lagunitas IPA in 1995 as an answer to the popular California pale ales like Sierra Nevada.

A big seller It’s a valuable trademark, too. Lagunitas has made the IPA — a bitter, extra hoppy beer style that British brewers originally made to ship to India — for almost 20 years.

IPA was Lagunitas' first seasonal, released in 1995. The beer's labels claim it's "made with 43 different hops and 65 various malts," which would be badass if true, if wildly impractical.
