The 5-county area saw a 2.6% decrease in population from July 1, 2020, through July 1, 2021, a 0.7% decrease the next year, and the most recent year it only dropped by 0.16%.

An estimate released in Decembe r by the U.S. Census Bureau said California's population fell by 75,000 residents in 2023. But those estimates were targeting different points in time.
