Nearly 40 years ago, FASA Corporation launched Battletech, a military sci-fi franchise that began as a miniatures board game and has become so much more to its fans.

The box includes fiction by legendary Battletech author Michael Stackpole to help set the scene. For veteran players there are rules for how to run a stable of mechs on the planet for fun and profit.

BattleTech also gives you the occasional dialogue option that doesn’t influence anything, as far as I can tell, but let me more confidently roleplay as the commander I wanted to be.

Battletech is a game that selfishly takes its time to be meticulous in every respect, and pushing through the density and idiosyncrasies of its many, slow-moving parts can be tough.
