Today, 101 years after the installation of the first modern, three-lens traffic light, yellow is the new green. Red is the new yellow. Green is the new red. It’s all very mystifying.
By the 1970s, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) stipulated that traffic cones must be painted yellow or orange-yellow and have a red trim.
