JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, prominent anti-apartheid activist and the ex-wife of Nelson Mandela, died in a hospital on Monday after a long illness. She was 81.
In 2003, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was convicted on 43 counts of fraud and 25 counts on of theft. The charges stemmed from a loan scheme that pilfered about $100,000 from funds earmarked for funerals.
