He had been confirmed as the new commandant on Sept. 21. The assistant commandant, Gen. Christopher Mahoney, has been serving as the acting head of the Marine Corps since Smith’s hospitalization.

Mahoney is a Massachusetts native and was sworn in as assistant commandant of the Marine Corps in November 2023. Mahoney’s career started in 1988 when he completed infantry officer training.
