Elon Musk backed Germany’s far-right Alternative for Deutschland party, known as the AfD, in an opinion piece published in a German newspaper on Saturday, wading deeper into international politics as the billionaire has become a fixture in Trump’s orbit.

U.S. billionaire Elon Musk backed Germany's Alternative for Germany (AfD) in a guest opinion piece for Germany's Welt am Sonntag newspaper published online on Saturday that prompted the commentary editor to resign in protest.

Elon Musk posted on X that the only thing that could “save Germany” was the AfD, he was embracing a political party that has moved progressively toward the extreme right since it was founded in 2013.

In a guest column for the German newspaper Die Welt, Elon Musk has called on Germany to vote for the anti-immigration party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), calling it “the last flicker of hope for the country”.

The AfD was founded in 2013, following the Euro Crisis. The party continues to argue for the withdrawal of Germany from the eurozone (the group of countries that use the Euro as their currency). In 2024, a policy on its website said Germany must "abandon the transfer union and leave the eurozone."

The US tech billionaire dismissed the narrative of Germany's AfD's being right-wing extremists as "clearly false." The populist party is polling second as Germany prepares for a parliamentary vote in February.
