Black chickens hit headlines last summer when bosses at North Florida's Greenfire Farms revealed they were selling a similar breed, the Ayam Cemani - for around around $200 (£130) per chick.

Swedish Black: Instantly recognized by its dark feathers, this breed is high prized for its rarity. Dong Tao: Known as "Dragon Chicken," this Vietnamese breed has massive legs and feet.

It was exported to Europe in the 18th century by sailors from the Dutch East India Company, and interbred to become the Swedish Black chicken. The Indonesian bird is thought to bring good luck.
