Building your own cables can be done at home and is quite simple. You only need two tools: A ribbon cable cutter and either a vise or a crimper. It's quite easy to make good cables.
Check out APS. I get most of my SCSI cables from them. They sell good cables at a good price. Their 25pin male (SCSI-1) to 50pin Centronics male cable is $3.95 for a 3' cable and $8.95 for a 6' cable.
