English Heritage, the custodian of Richmond Castle, organises themed events throughout the year designed to appeal to all the family. See the website www.english-heritage.org.uk for details.
Now English Heritage has started a project to preserve some of the roughly 5,000 drawings, hymns and thoughts scrawled on the crumbling cell walls that now date back 100 years.
The castle was built out of stone rather than wood, which was unusual for its time. Dramatically perched on a rocky promontory, the castle overlooks the River Swale and the market town of Richmond.
