Redbud is adaptable to different soil types and pH but won’t grow in waterlogged conditions. It’s a tree for full sun or part shade and is hardy in Zones 5 to 9.

The redbud flowers are stemless, developing directly from the branches or trunk. This characteristic is called cauliflory, and occurs in other plants such as papaya and fig trees too.

Cercis canadensis, the eastern redbud, is native to the Eastern U.S., from New England to Florida and west to Texas. They are lovely, small, understory trees.
