You will achieve better-looking and longer-lasting results if you use primers, whether you are painting bare wood, metal, plastic or just about any surface -- even ceramic tile.

I use a name-brand rusty-metal primer on rust-coated steel. So far, it has performed well. I tested it last year painting some rusty steel, and on purpose I didn’t coat the primer with finish paint.
