The canine organisation states that the XL bully is a recent breed dating back to the 1980s and has grown in popularity due to its "distinctive build and height combined with a compassionate nature".

It is now illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange, abandon, or let XL bully dogs stray. Those who own these breeds must keep them on a lead and muzzled when in public.

On February 1 this year, the XL Bully became the fifth breed to be banned. Banned breeds are managed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
