The Empress of Asia arrived in Vancouver on Aug. 31, 1913. After a couple of years as a luxury liner, she was taken over by the British navy during the First World War.

In the mid-1950s, I was a teenager living in Singapore with my parents. Somewhere around 1953-54, my father, Capt. Herring, was in charge of salvage operations on the Empress of Asia.
